hiatus (noun) gap; break.

A break or an interruption is a hiatus. A pause is a hiatus. 'After a hiatus of two years the US resumed space flights.' This means, the interval between the earlier space flight and the next space flight was two years. If there is a hiatus in your studies for a year, there is a break for a year in your studies.
