hibernate (verb) (of animals) sleep throughout the winter.

When an animal hibernates it is in a state of deep sleep during the whole of winter. It has no other activity. A number of animals including polar bears and certain classes of rodents, etc., hibernate, that is, they go into a state of long sleep, for the whole of winter.

  • As the animals hibernate, the fat accumulated in their bodies, by their overeating before going into their winter sleep, keeps them warm during the season.
  • How animals manage to stay without food during the period that they hibernate is a matter of wonder still. Science has yet to find out how this happens during the long sleep of the hibernating animals.
