A hieroglyphic is a picture or symbol in a system of writing, especially in the ancient Egyptian system of writing. In it instead of letters, pictures and symbols are used to represent words, syllables, and sounds. A system of writing in which the picture of a thing represents the thing is hieroglyphics. It is, in other words, picture writing. A number of ancient writing systems made use of hieroglyphics.

  • Most hieroglyphics of ancient Egypt have been deciphered as a result of scholarly research and it has thrown light on a number of interesting aspects of ancient Egyptian history and culture.
  • The symbols on the tablets found in the sites of the Indus Valley Civilization of ancient India resemble the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, which is a system of picture writing.
