holocaust (noun) large-scale destruction and large number of deaths.

A war or fire causes a holocaust if the war or the fire causes a large-scale destruction of property and lives. The September 11 collapse of The World Trade Centre in New York and the consequent loss of life and property is a good example of a holocaust. The nuclear holocaust is the destruction of life and property on a large-scale by the explosion of a nuclear bomb.

  • The holocaust of World War II flattened the whole city of Nagasaki in a matter of seconds. The whole city was ablaze and a large number of people lay dead or were dying, and a number of buildings were either on fire or were collapsing.
  • Pacifists counsel against a third world war because of the holocaust that nuclear weapons, which will certainly be used in such a war, can cause. That can result in the destruction of the whole or most of the world.
