Slums are full of hovels, that is, makeshift houses, which are very dirty and small and so, unfit for human beings to live in. A very small, very dirty house-like place where only very poor people manage to live is a hovel. Usually hovels are houses made of boards and tin sheets.

  • Born in the back lanes of an Italian city in a hovel which contrasts with the palatial mansion he now lives, he rose to the position of one of the wealthiest actors in Hollywood.
  • The slum dwellers evicted from their hovels on the river bank have yet to be provided with alternate accommodation. It is expected they will be provided with decent accommodation contrasting with the hovels they have lived in.
