hubris (noun) too much of pride; extreme arrogance.
If a person has hubris, they are too proud or arrogant to heed to others’ advice of caution. They are too sure of themselves and land themselves in trouble. In literature, the hero of a tragedy has this hubris which makes him disregard warnings of danger and moves towards his downfall or death.
- In the ancient Greek tragedy, the hero, because of his hubris, was too arrogant and proud to be cautious and careful, and thus brought ruin upon him.
- Henry’s hubris made him throw caution to the winds and invite ruin.
