illicit (adj) illegal; not accepted by society.

Illicit drugs are drugs banned by law. Illicit distillation is brewing of liquor without the proper license from the government. Illicit trade is trade in banned goods or trade carried out without license. Trade in dangerous commodities like guns, explosives, drugs, etc., without the proper permit is illicit. A relationship, for example, between an undivorced married man and an unmarried woman is illicit, as it is not approved by society. An illicit love affair is a love affair not accepted by society. An illegitimate child is a child born of an illicit love affair.

  • Jonathan became a millionaire by means of his illicit drug trade, but his millions could not save him from being sentenced to twenty years in jail for it.
