imminent (adj) about to happen.

Rain is imminent if it is about to rain. A person's resignation is imminent if they are going to resign very soon. The threat of war is imminent if a war is about to begin very shortly. If a person is fatally injured death is imminent. That is, the person will die soon.

  • As they were warned that a storm was imminent, they dropped their idea of putting out to the sea. And surely in just half an hour the sea was all turbulence because of a storm.
  • The threat of a war appeared imminent during the period of Cold War between the NATO countries and the Soviet Bloc from the late sixties to the early nineties. Fortunately it passed off with the dissolution of the USSR in the late nineties.
