When a person is killed by burning as a sacrifice, they are immolated. Among certain societies in the past the practice of immolating people did prevail. On certain occasions, persons were burnt to death, that is, immolated as a sacrifice to gods and goddesses. There have been cases of self-immolation too, that is, a person burning themselves to death, as an act of sacrifice to a deity, or as an act of protest.
- The priest ordained the daughter of the poor peasant to be immolated, just because she had refused to yield to his desire. The superstitious tribespersons did burn her to death as a sacrifice to the goddess.
- The man demanding the end of the rule of the despot immolated himself to make the point that he would rather die than suffer the despot's rule.
