impale (verb) pierce.

You impale a thing when you pierce it, that is, when you pass a sharp pointed object like a spear through it. A person is impaled if they are pierced by a sharp object like a spear or a dagger. 'The soldier was impaled as a spear from the enemy impaled his body.' This means that the enemy’s spear pierced him and caused his death. Impaling a piece of meat is to pierce it with a fork.

  • Nelson died a horrible death as he fell on the sharp railings below and was impaled.
  • The child offered as a sacrifice to the tribal deity was impaled on the sharp point of a spear stuck in the ground.
