impecunious (adj) without money; poor.

An impecunious person is a person without money, especially over a long period. Impecunious circumstances are a situation in which a person is poor and cannot raise money. Impecunious circumstances may drive people to do anything including bad things, just to keep their hunger off. That is, when people have no money over a long period, they may be tempted to get money by wrong or immoral means.

  • The sudden illness and the impecunious circumstances he found himself in forced him to attempt a suicide. Even there, however, he was unlucky as it failed, and he had to live on in poverty.
  • Having been impecunious for over three years, he had no money to send his son to university.
