Laziness is an impediment to success. That is, laziness prevents a person from being successful. Unemployment is a serious impediment to progress. That is, unemployment among its people delays or stops the progress of a country. Storms are an impediment to the progress of a ship across the sea. That is, storms are a hindrance to the journey of the ship. A physical or mental problem which obstructs a person's free speech or movement is an impediment.

  • The delay in industrialization and automation has been an impediment to the progress of most of the Third World countries. Their economic backwardness is purely because of lack of industries and automation.
  • Professor Donovan is highly learned and is an excellent teacher. Unfortunately he suffers from a speech impediment which makes it difficult for his students to make out quickly what he speaks.
