impermeable (adj) (of a material) not allowing liquid or gas to pass through.

An impermeable substance does not permit gas or liquid to pass through it. All nonporous substances are impermeable, that is, they do not allow gas or liquid to pass through them. A waterproof material like rubber is impermeable because water cannot pass through it. Nonporous rocks like volcanic rocks are also impermeable.

  • Even in the heavy rain, Christopher's books were not damaged, because the bag he carried them in was of impermeable material. Not a drop of water could seep into the bag.
  • The foil packing in which the processed coffee was packed was impermeable and so the flavor and the quality of coffee could be preserved for a long time.
