impetus (noun) a driving force; motive.

A force or a happening that helps a process to develop more quickly is impetus. A movement receives an impetus, if, because of the impetus, the movement becomes more active and progresses faster. Indian independence movement received an impetus with the arrival of Mahatma Gandhi on the scene as he took it to a higher plane, by involving all the people in it.

  • Freud and Jung's studies in psychology gave an impetus to the use of psychoanalysis in the understanding of the motives behind the actions of human beings.
