implode (verb) explode inwards.
When, following an explosion, a building collapses inwards, it implodes. The debris falls inwards, without flying out all over. When a vacuum tube bursts, the pieces of the tube fall inward into the tube without being scattered all over the place.
- When an old building is to be demolished, it is imploded, so that the building caves in, and the fall out of debris over a large area around is avoided.
- When the old bridge had to be replaced, it was imploded. The bridge collapsed in, and it appeared as though the earth opened and swallowed a part of the debris.
