impregnable (adj) (of a building, fort, etc.,) that cannot be entered.

A building that is impregnable is so strongly built or so well guarded that none can enter it by force. A fort is impregnable if the enemy army cannot enter it because the fort is very strongly built and very well guarded. Impregnable defense is defense that does not yield to the opposition. An impregnable lead in a competition makes it difficult or impossible for the losing team to recover, and go on to win.

  • The impregnable defense put up by the players along the second line made it difficult for the attacking players to take the ball beyond them.
  • The fort remained impregnable for the enemy until one of the traitors showed the enemy a secret passage into the fort.
