An improper action or behavior is impropriety. A wrong action on the wrong occasion is an impropriety. To joke at a funeral ceremony is an act of impropriety, just as it is impropriety to be sad at a marriage. When a person in a responsible position behaves dishonestly or improperly, they are guilty of impropriety. Behavior unacceptable by moral, social or professional standards is impropriety.
