impugn (verb) challenge, express doubts about the honesty, ability, courage, etc of a person.

When you impugn a statement, you challenge its correctness. When you impugn a personís honesty, you doubt it. You dispute a personís right to something, if you impugn it. You impugn a personís bravery or honesty when you doubt it.

  • The senatorís speech impugned the honesty of the Government in awarding a company the contract for defense supplies. He complained that people in power had been bribed for the award of the contract.
  • The auditors impugned the accuracy of the accounts prepared by the accountant of the company. The accountant felt offended that his honesty and ability were doubted.
