inanimate (adj) lifeless; non-living.

An inanimate object is a nonliving object like a stone, a chair, etc. A dead body is inanimate. Inanimate objects lack movement of their own.

  • Children do not know that inanimate objects like toys and dolls do not have life. They talk to them and deal with them as though they had life and respond to our talk.
  • The monsters and the other fearful creatures shown in some of the Hollywood movies are inanimate objects, but they appear to be living because of the fantastic special effects worked out by the technicians.
