incapacitate (verb) disable.

When a person is incapacitated they cannot live and work normally because of an illness or injury, unlike persons in good health. An accident incapacitates a person, if following the injuries caused by it; they cannot live or move about as other people do. That is, a paralytic cannot live and work normally unlike people in sound health.

  • The severe injuries he has sustained while playing football have incapacitated him for a few moths. During the period he could not even walk for a little distance.
  • Charles has been incapacitated by his rheumatism. He cannot walk or move about normally or bend his legs.
