incidence (noun) the rate of occurrence of a bad thing, like a disease, crime, etc., and of their effects.

The incidence of AIDS in an area is the number of people affected by it in the area. The rate or the extent of occurrence of the disease or its effect in an area is its incidence in the area. If the number of cases is low, the incidence is low, if high, high. A high incidence of crime is the large number of crimes committed in an area. High incidence of unemployment is the large scale unemployment in a region.

  • The increasing incidence of AIDS in developing countries is due to the lack of education about the disease. The lack of medicare too contributes to the increase in its incidence.
  • Economic growth does not always mean a reduction in the incidence of crime. The high incidence of crime in the US cities and their suburbs show that crime rate is not always linked to poverty.
