incipient (adj) just born, beginning to happen.

An incipient republic is a republic which has just begun to exist. A disease in its incipient stage is one that has just attacked a person. ‘The pale white spots on his skin and lack of sensation there were symptoms of an incipient serious skin disorder.’ This means that the spots are signs of a disease that has just attacked him.

  • The child’s yawns in the class were only signs of incipient boredom and exhaustion.
  • The US in the late 1770's was an incipient republic, having won its independence from the British rule in 1774. The country then in its early stages of growth had the guidance of able leaders to take it on to its new destiny.
