incite (verb) rouse, instigate.

When you incite some one, you encourage them to do something violent, illegal or unpleasant especially by causing anger in them about something. When you incite people you encourage them to cause trouble. You incite people to fight if you rouse them to a fight, mostly for a bad cause.

  • During and after the Civil War in the US the Ku Klux Klan incited the whites to violence against the blacks. As a result those it incited burnt down a number of black colonies and killed a number of blacks.
  • The extremist was arrested on charges of inciting people to violence and rebelling against a duly elected government, and indeed had made speeches rousing people against the government.
