increment (noun) (Of salary) an increase in salary every year; the amount of increase.

An increment is a regular increase in the salary someone is paid. It is usually an annual increase. A salary of $2000 per month with an increment of $100 means that the salary is increased every year by $100. The amount by which the salary is raised, in this case $100, is an increment.

  • Paul has been denied his increment this year as punishment for his irregularity and carelessness. So he has to make do without any increase in the salary.
  • In view of his merit he was appointed with two advanced increments, which means that at the beginning of his job, he will draw the starting salary plus the sum of two increments.
