incrustation (noun) formation of hard covering or layer over a surface; the layer so formed.

The formation of a hard layer of dust and dirt on a surface, over a period, because of natural processes, is incrustation. The layer or the crust so formed is incrustation.

  • The incrustation on the iron cover of the tank made it insulated against electricity. The worker on removing the incrustation received a shock as a live wire was in contact with it.
  • Because of long disuse the overhead had thick incrustation, and during the renovation of the building the workers had a tough time scraping it off.
