incur (verb) acquire (something unpleasant); bring upon oneself.

When you incur something unpleasant, you have to deal with it, you have no escape from it. If you incur something, you find yourself in an unpleasant situation of your own making. You incur expenditure if you have to spend unnecessarily or spend on something bad. If you incur losses, you experience losses for which you alone are responsible.

  • Because of unplanned expenditure and limited resources he incurred huge debts. It is doubtful if he can ever be clear of them.
