indenture (noun) bind by contract for service.

In the past, people bound servants or laborers by contract for a certain period. That is, according to the contract, they had to serve their hirers for a certain period. Similarly apprentices were also bound by contract for a particular period. That is, after their training was completed, they had to work for the masters for a certain period. This kind of practice is indenture.

  • Though he was indentured to serve his master for a period of the ten years, his master was kind enough to release him at the end of the fifth year.
  • The surgeon to whom he was apprenticed insisted that he serve him for two years after the completion of apprenticeship.
