indict (verb) charge (in a court of law).

When a formal complaint (a charge) of a crime are officially made in a court of law against a person, the person is indicted. In others words, a person is indicted when they are charged. A person is indicted for murder if they are brought before a court to face trial on charges of murder.

  • Smith has been indicted for rape and murder. As he has been charged he has appeared before the court with his own lawyer who is sure that the charges cannot be proved.
  • The movie actor has been indicted for forgery, but she denied the charges on oath.
