indigence (noun) poverty.

A person lives in indigence if they live in poverty, if they are too poor even to afford a meal. Indigence forces people to beg, borrow or steel. That is, when people are poor they are tempted to beg, borrow, or steal.

  • Until Europe emerged as a major industrial power in the 19th and the 20th centuries, most European countries had lived in indigence until industrial growth freed them from poverty.
  • We are certainly far from realizing Nelson Mandela’s dream of making indigence a thing of the past all over the world, but reaching such a stage is worth trying.
