infringe (verb) violate (a rule, law, etc.).

When you infringe a law you break it. Your action, for example, of pirating video or audio tapes infringes copyright regulations. That is, you violate the laws of copyright if you copy video or audio recordings without proper permission. You infringe on others’ rights if you limit their rights. For example, when you publish the private affairs of an individual, you infringe on their right to privacy. When you order a person not to talk in a meeting, you limit their freedom to talk, so you infringe on their right to talk.

  • Mike was found to be in possession of drugs. He was found guilty of infringing the drug regulation act, and was sentenced.
  • By unauthorized copying of substantial material from the book, he infringed the copyright law.
