inimical (adj) unfriendly; unfavorable.

Your inimical attitude to someone is your unfriendly attitude to them. When you are inimical, you are unfriendly. An inimical stare is your unfriendly look. The steps taken by a government are inimical to the interests of the country if they are unfavorable or harmful to the country. A climate is inimical to the growth of a crop, if it is unfavorable to the growth of the crop there. Actions which cause disunity and ill feeling among people are inimical to the unity and good will among people.

  • Very high temperatures and excessive rainfall are inimical to the cultivation of wheat and corn. In such a climate these crops cannot thrive.
  • Charles’s inimical attitude to his superiors has robbed him of any chances of promotion in the job. He is ill tempered and talks always in an unfriendly manner to others.
