innocuous (adj) harmless; not offensive or dangerous.

Innocuous remarks are not offensive or harmful. Innocuous remarks do not offend anybody. An innocuous substance is a harmless substance. 'A little wine now and then is innocuous even for a diabetic.' This means that no harm is there if a diabetic takes a little wine occasionally.

  • The seemingly innocuous remarks the manager has made have in them an indirect threat to the workers. Only those who knew the manager well could understand that his remarks were not that harmless.
  • The case lying at the corner of the room looked innocuous, and people thought that it was a case like any other case. Only when the workers moved the case did they suspect explosives in it.
