insurrection (noun) rebellion.

An insurrection is an attempt by a large group of people to take control of power in their own country, by force. We have had a number of successful cases of insurrection in Asian and African countries where the army has seized power from the elected governments.

  • The president has been successful in quelling the insurrection led by an ex army chief of the country. The president has strengthened his position by putting all the leaders of the rebel forces to death.
  • The insurrection led by the discontented leaders of the country has been able to topple the government of the country. In their attempt they had the support of the army.
