invalidate (verb) prove a theory wrong; make a thing legally or officially unacceptable; weaken.
Darwin's theory of evolution of species invalidated all the earlier theories about the origin of life on earth. That is, Darwin's theory has proved all the earlier theories wrong. Similarly, later findings have invalidated some aspects of Darwin's theory; that is, later discoveries have shown some aspects of Darwin’s theory wrong. So, to prove something wrong or unacceptable anymore is to invalidate it. A document, a claim, etc., are invalidated, if they are no longer officially accepted.
- Galileo's discoveries invalidated all the beliefs about the Solar System and planetary motion till then prevalent. In fact his discoveries proved to be the opposite of what till then had been held as true.
