invocation (noun) prayer; request for help.

Invocation is a prayer to a god or a person in power for help. It is a call for help to our superior beings in our efforts. Many poems begin with an invocation, that is, a prayer for help from God above, or from some such superior being, for the successful completion of the poem and for its fame.

  • Milton's great epic, Paradise Lost, begins with an invocation to the Holy Spirit, in which he prays the Holy Spirit's help to write a poem, which 'mankind will not willingly let die.'
  • The priest uttered some holy words as an invocation at the inauguration of the dam. He was asking for God's help for the successful completion of the dam.
