junket (noun) pleasure trip paid for by the government.

A pleasure trip made by a government official at the expense of the government is a junket. Most officials and ministers often combine work with pleasure to go on trips at government expense. These are junkets. On a foreign tour the officials are on duty of course, but they also take the occasion for sightseeing and other kinds of enjoyment. All this is naturally paid for by the governments. Such pleasure trips are junkets.

  • It was as though Stemson became a senator just to enjoy junkets. Under the least pretext he makes trips abroad at government expense.
  • The bill on the junkets of the secretaries of the government and the other officials for the year just ended was in millions of dollars, and most of the trips had little justifiable cause. The opposition was naturally critical about it.
