juxtapose (verb) place side by side.

When you place two things or persons side by side to show their difference or to show them in a new way, you juxtapose them. Old paintings are juxtaposed with abstract art if they are placed side by side to show how different they are. In a juxtaposition of a bright object and a dark object, they are placed together, to bring about a new effect.

  • The juxtaposition of the character of the father and the son in the novel, one with conventional beliefs and the other with revolutionary ideas, makes the novel interesting.
  • The painting is remarkable for its juxtaposition of brilliant red with white in some of the places. It makes the white stand out.
