When you place two things or persons side by side to show their difference or to show them in a new way, you juxtapose them. Old paintings are juxtaposed with abstract art if they are placed side by side to show how different they are. In a juxtaposition of a bright object and a dark object, they are placed together, to bring about a new effect.
