kindle (verb) start a fire; inspire.

starting a fire is kindling. When you kindle you make a fire start burning. A fire kindles if it starts burning. A flame kindles if it starts burning. You kindle enthusiasm in someone if you create or rouse enthusiasm in someone for something. A song, for example, kindles patriotism in people, if it inspires them with patriotism. A speech kindles the spirit of service in someone if the speech fills them with the desire for service.
