laceration (noun) serious cut in the skin or flesh.

When you have a laceration you have a cut in your skin or flesh because of the sharp edge of something or of a weapon. Laceration results in the cut or the tearing of skin or flesh. When a sharp instrument injures a person, his skin or flesh is badly cut, and such a cut is a laceration.

  • The child overrun by a speeding vehicle was brought to hospital in a serious condition. There were lacerations all over its shoulders and face. The cuts were deep and there was a lot of bleeding.
  • The surgeon sutured up the laceration on his arm which was cut by the sharp edge of the mudguard of an old car.
