lament (verb) grieve.

Lamenting is expressing deep sorrow or disappointment about something, quite often the death of a person or about a great loss. 'The whole nation lamented the death of the great player.' This means that the whole nation experienced and expressed great sorrow over the death of the great player. People lament the decline of moral values if they feel sad about the fall in moral standards.

  • The whole college lamented the death of the vice president as they felt sad that they lost in his death a man of vision and dynamism.
  • Film critics often lament the decline in the taste of the people. They are sad that the present movies lack the artistic values reflected in the old movies.
