A high reading desk for a person to keep his notes or book on, when they stand up and make a sermon in a church, give a talk to a gathering, or read out something is a lectern Such lecterns are very common in lecture halls and seminar and conference rooms.

  • The speaker found it very inconvenient to deliver his lecture without a lectern. He needed some desk like thing to keep his lecture notes on, as he had to refer to them frequently in the course of his lecture.
  • The lectern was too high for the short young genius who was there to give a lecture. His face was hidden behind the lectern. So he preferred to hold the slips of paper in his hand while giving the talk, instead of using the lectern.
