An old well known story about the heroic actions of a great hero or an important event of distant past which has been told for a long time is a legend. We talk of the legend of Robin Hood; that is, stories about his heroic actions and adventures. A person who becomes very famous in any field is a legend. We say, for example, that the actor Clark Gable became a legend in his life time. That is, he became very famous as an outstanding actor. Sachin Tendulkar is a cricket legend; that is, he is an extraordinary cricketer, equaled by only a few. The explanatory notes about the symbols used in a map or a diagram are a legend. “According to the legend, the brown color in the map indicates a mountain range.” This means that the legend shows that brown indicates mountains in the map.
