lunge (verb) sudden forward movement to attack someone or something.

When a person lunges at something or somebody, they make a sudden forward movement to attack it or them. 'She lunged at him and took the bag from him.' This means, she moved forward suddenly towards him and snatched the bag from him. When a person wants to attack their enemy, they lunge at them, that is, they jump towards them in an attacking manner. The tiger lunges when it sees a deer, that is, it jumps forward to attack the deer.

  • When he saw her entering the room, he lunged at her and snatched the gold chain around her neck. She was shocked and speechless at his sudden movement and attack.
  • With his sword drawn, he lunged at his opponent. The opponent, who was not prepared for this, suddenly took to heels, to escape from the attack.
