A thing has luster if it shines and is brilliant. Polished gold has luster, that is, it has the quality of shining. A surface has luster if it shines brightly. The luster of the polished surface is its brightness. To add luster to something is to make it interesting or exciting. 'The presence of the movie star added luster to the occasion.' This means that the occasion appeared special and exciting because of the presence of the film star there.

  • The gold ornaments found in the excavation site by the archeological department, when polished, acquired wonderful luster and glittered in the sun.
  • The occasion had added luster with the president among the invitees. His presence there made the function all the more interesting.
