mandate (noun) order, command; the right and power given to a government by the voters to carry out certain policies.

An official order given to someone to carry out a particular task is a mandate. ‘He is here with the mandate from the president to negotiate terms for the agreement.’ This means that he has the authority to carry out the negotiations to reach an agreement. A mandate is the right and power the voters give a government they elect to carry out certain policies. If the government has a clear mandate from the people to continue reforms, the voters who have elected it have given it the power and the authority to continue the reforms. The government has been elected because the continuation of the reforms is its agenda.

  • The prime minister in the inaugural session of the parliament declared that his party had a clear mandate from the people to make all efforts to root out unemployment and stagnation. It was on this agenda that his party had been elected.
  • The finance minister has been sent to participate in the conference with the mandate form the prime minister to announce a reduction in the tax rates on imports.
