matriarch (noun) woman controlling a family or a social group.
A woman, especially an older woman, who controls or heads a family or a community, is a matriarch. In some primitive societies, it is the women who head the community, and such women are matriarchs. A matriarchal society is a society in which women are the leaders.
- The matriarch ruled the family with an authority and power that can equal or surpass even men. Though she was a woman she was more competent than anybody else in the group.
