matrix (noun) a situation from which a person or a society grows and develops their or its attitudes, culture, etc.; a mold in which something is shaped; (mathematics) an arrangement of numbers and symbols arranged in rows and columns.

The cultural matrix of a society or an individual is the situation or the origin from which the system or the person develops its or their culture. 'Asia Minor is the matrix of the Aryan culture.' This means that the region of Asia Minor is the place the Aryan culture, their beliefs and attitudes took shape. A matrix is a mold in which molten metal is cast into shape. Molten rubber is put in matrices (plural of matrix) to be molted into a tire for vehicles. A row of numbers and symbols arranged in rows and columns and treated as a single quantity in algebra is a matrix.

  • The cultures of the East and the West differ a lot mainly because of the difference in the matrices which shaped them. Their ways of life and thinking have been developed differently because of the circumstances and regions of their origin.
  • A matrix decides what kind of individual a person grows into; the home atmosphere during the childhood forms the matrix of the individual; it is this that shapes him as human being.
