mealy-mouthed (adj) not outspoken; evasive.
A mealy-mouthed person is not brave or honest enough to speak out their opinion openly. If a person is mealy-mouthed, they are not outspoken or frank. They are rather indirect in their speech. They are not forthright. They try to convey in an indirect manner whatever they want to say.
- I could not gather anything from his mealy-mouthed words. He was not direct or honest in expressing his opinion and even now I do not know what he felt about the situation.
- The politician's mealy-mouthed speech did not convey his real feelings. He appeared to be afraid of hurting a section of his voters by being open and straightforward, and thus of losing their votes.
