mediate (verb) end differences, disputes, quarrels, etc., between persons, groups, nations, etc..

When you mediate between two quarreling persons, groups, etc., you settle their differences by talking to both the parties and suggesting a solution acceptable to them. You end their quarrel or dispute by proposing a solution. The UN mediates between warring nations; that is, it tries to bring peace between them by settling their disputes and end the war. 'Switzerland has offered to mediate between the Srilankan government and the rebel LTTE organization.' This means that Switzerland has offered to settle the fight between the two by suggesting a solution.

  • India has politely refused the offer of the US to mediate in the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan. The US has been prepared to find an amicable solution to the problem.
  • His attempts to mediate in the dispute between the workers and the management have failed because neither is willing to make the concessions he has suggested.
