medium (noun) way of communicating ideas, news, and information to people; something used for a particular purpose; the material or the form that any artist or a writer uses; material or substance in which organisms grow or exist; money or other means of exchange.

A medium is a way of communication; a way which we use to communicate news, information, and ideas to others. The newspaper in that sense is a medium of communication. The TV and the radio are also media of communication. We talk of a medium of instruction also: we mean the language of instruction; the language through which subjects in schools and colleges are taught. An author's medium of communication is writing, just as an artist's medium is painting or sculpture. A dancer chooses the medium of dancing to express her talent for dance. The material in which an organism grows and exists is also a medium. Scientists, for example, culture bacteria for studies about them, in substances in which they grow. Such a substance is called a medium.

  • She has excelled in the medium she has chosen to show her talent, and that medium is music.
  • In these days of mass media like the satellite TV and the internet, news travels very fast, and this has contributed a lot to the concept of global village.
